Mazamas Leader Since: 1998

Preferred Pace
(1-slow, 5-fast):

I Like Climbing On: Everything

Mazamas Service: 15 point leader award; Chaired Incident Response and Risk Management Committee 1998-2001; Climbing Committee 1999-2001; Coordinated BCEP 2000

Major Climbing Achievements: My "major" climbs are the fun, memorable ones: Led climb of Grand Teton in summer 2004, with beautiful weather, great Mazama friends, and fun time in Jackson Hole; mostly climbed in Cascades; assisted Conservation Committee Outing in Seven Devils followed by rafting on Snake River. Solo traverse of Aenach Aegach Ridge in Glen Coe, Scotland; Any day with mountain views and away from work is a major memory!

Climbing and Leadership Philosophy: Participatory leadership style, where group can accomplish goals that they couldn't if attempting singly; my leadership tends to be invisible even though I'm diligent and attentive to the group; I value good two-way communication; climbers with egos to defend need not apply for climbs; I want to enjoy the beauty and awe that nature provides us, but in a safe way that at times requires speed and skill.

Favorite Summit Treat: Anything healthy, although chocolate and nuts are wonderful

Personal Information: Like to climb with my life partner Mary; we have 4 kids between us, who are all grown-up and scattered across the country; am Illinois-raised, with more rock experience, who moved here because I fell in love with the state and with Mary in 1987. Like to travel to see children and grandson.
