A cartridge stove cold weather tipThe new breed of cartridge stoves are lightweight and very easy to use, but they have a problem in cold weather. The propane/butane fuel mix just does not work very well. One widely used method around this problem is using a heat exchanger made of hammered copper wire. This has some potential safety problems, and there is a safer, (though maybe slightly less convenient) way. Either dunk the cartridge periodically in the water you are bringing to boil, or use another pot below the cartridge to put about 1/4 inch of hot water from the pan. This extra heat will keep the stove under proper pressure. |
