A cure for altitude sickness? There are some new studies out that indicate the herb ginko biloba (the most widely consumed herb in Europe) assists with many aspects of adapting to altitude. In a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 40 volunteers who lived at 4,600 ft were taken rapidly to 14,100 ft to spent the night. Compared to those taking placebo, subjects taking ginko had half the incidence of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) symptoms, and those on ginko who did become ill had far milder symptoms. (One of these studies was conducted by Dr. Peter Hackett, an internationally recognized expert in high altitude medicine.) Protocol: ginko biloba, 120 mg morning, 120 mg again in the evening, starting 5 days prior to the ascent, and continuing at altitude. It’s cheap, easily available, has very few side effects. Try it on your next Shasta or Rainier climb! For more info, see these web links: |
