A few rappel tips . . .
- Consider using a fireman’s belay when you have a group of people rapping. It’s quick, easy, and adds an extra measure of safety.
- If it’s really windy, tossing the ropes might cause them to get hung up and tangled. Consider lowering them with you as you rap.
- Before the last person raps, have someone who has already gone down do a test pull on the rope. If it hangs up or is hard to pull, the last person on top has a chance to fix it.
- If you are rapping where you can’t see if the ropes touch ground or a good ledge, tie a stopper knot in the bottom of each strand. Don’t tie the ropes together, as twists can’t work themselves out of the rope. Be sure and untie the stopper knot before you pull the rope!
- Don’t use a prusik knot as a rappel backup. There have been many accidents that prove these don’t always work. If you feel the need to use a backup, use an autoblock below your brake hand instead.
