A leash for your pack

On routes where the terrain gets steep (or where you might want to remove your pack if you fall into a crevasse) adding a leash onto your pack can avoid the catastrophe of a dropped pack. Simply take a sewn 24 inch runner (I like the 8mm extra-skinny Mammut runners) girth hitch it to your pack’s grab loop, and add a biner. When climbing, the biner stays out of the way clipped to your shoulder strap or waist belt. At an anchor on steep terrain, you clip the biner into the anchor before you take off your pack, eliminating any chance of dropping your pack.  This is simple, inexpensive, and great insurance on steep terrain.
