Backing up a rappel anchor

image

Often when rapping off a climb, you may see a rap anchor that consists of a few loops of webbing with a single metal connection for the rope: a quicklink, rap ring, or biner. Adding another point of pro might be a good idea to back up the single connection, but you might be reluctant to part with another biner.

Here’s a solution: just take 2 feet of webbing or cord, and tie it into a loop that’s just a bit larger than the metal connection. This effectively backs up the primary anchor point, and as the webbing is just a bit larger than the connector, permits an easy rope pull with no friction damage to the backup sling.
