Bear-proof your food - hang it on a rock

Black bears may be decent tree climbers, but they can’t climb rock.  Use this to your advantage - try to camp near a small cliff face, climb up a bit, and and hang your backcountry chow.  Use a tiny biner and a bit of webbing or cord to attach a stuff bag to hold your food.  This can be a LOT easier then trying to rig a bear bag in a tree.

Also, make a point to cook away from your camp.  Consider stopping and eating dinner in the late afternoon, then hiking on an hour or so and making camp away from an established areas.  Human conditioned bears won’t smell you cooking, and they likely won’t find your “stealth” camp.
