Bring long tied runners for alpine routes

For alpine climbs, bring two tied double length runners in addition to sewn ones.  Tied runners are cheaper, and can be tied together or around trees, rocks etc. to leave as rappel anchors.  (Double runners are 4 feet long, single runners are 2 feet long.)

Use 9 feet of 11/16 inch tubular webbing for each runner.

Avoid 1 inch webbing for runners, as it’s needlessly heavy, bulky and weighs more when wet.

Leaving one of these as a rappel anchor is a financially easier decision than leaving a $30 spectra cordelette!  If everyone in the party carries two tied double runners, you’ll be equipped to make safe raps off most any route.  (Always get double duty out of your gear - don’t bring extra webbing for raps, “just in case”.)
