Carry some surveyor’s tape

A few meters of brightly colored plastic surveyors/flagging tape can be a handy routefinding aid.  Use it for:

  • Scouting a route and marking the way for a pre-dawn start the next morning
  • Marking key points and returning along the same route on a cross-country hike or climb
  • Leaving a “bread crumb” trail for search and rescue personnel to follow back an injured person

Tips:
Get a roll for cheap at any hardware store.  One roll goes a L O N G way, so share a roll among your climbing pals.
Wrap about 10-15 feet around a drinking straw and secure with tape for easy, compact storage.
Be sure and collect the tape when you hike out - leaving it is litter.
