Cell Phones in the Backcountry – 3 Tips to Conserve Battery PowerTaking your cell phone on a hike or climb as a means to make an emergency call is standard practice for many backcountry travelers. But this does little good if the battery is dead when you need it most. Here are three simple tips to extend battery life: 1) If you are in a remote area without cell coverage, be sure and turn off your phone. Reason: In areas like this, your phone will constantly “search” for service and deplete the batteries much more quickly. 2) Lower or turn off the backlight brightness of your phone screen. This feature needlessly consumes battery power. 3) Send text messages, rather than calling. Texting uses less power than a phone call, which may mean that a text message works when no phone signal does or the phone’s battery is low. This is the first of several tips for backcountry cell phone use, so stay tuned for more. |
