Don’t clip the end loop on your daisy chainSewn daisy chains were designed for aid climbing, to support body weight and not much more. The sewn pockets will hold just 4kN (about 800 lbs). A hard fall can easily generate this amount and more force, leading to a ripped pocket or two, stained pants or worse. Even so, many climbers like to use these for “personal pro”, as a leash to connect themselves to an anchor. Often these folks clip a pocket to stay in close, and then clip the end loop “as a backup.” Well, it may be hard to imagine, but you actually INCREASE the risk of a daisy failure by clipping the end pocket. A picture is worth a whole lotta words, so check out this video from Black Diamond: http://www.bdel.com/videos/daisy.html (Solution: Use a 4 foot long runner as a leash with a few overhand knots in it. The knots will never fail.) |
