Duct tape - carrying methods

We all know that duct tape is a handy item in your first aid or fix-it kit, but what about carrying it? Hog-tying your trekking pole, water bottle or ice axe with a dozen wraps might make you look like a savvy climber, but getting that tape off in a useable piece might be tough after a year or so of being baked, frozen, wet and everything in between. To be sure that tape comes off in one piece, don’t carry it wrapped onto anything exposed to the elements.
Two suggestions:
1) Wrap it around a 3” pencil stub and carry it in your first aid kit. (Use the pencil to fill out a patient assessment form or compose backcountry haiku.)
2) Many hardware stores now sell 10 yard rolls of tape - just the size for a backcountry fix it kit. Keeping the tape on the original roll helps keep the glue in better condition. Try tape in a color other than gray.
