Fire starting tip - plastic tubingAnother trick for fires is to carry a small length of plastic tubing, like what you’d use in an aquarium. Get it at most hardware stores. It’s very light, and you use it to blow into just the right spots to keep a fire going. It is more efficient and works better than fanning the coals. Plus it weighs next to nothing. Don’t melt the end! Tubing like this is also great on desert hikes, where you can use it to suck water out of tiny seeps and springs. It’s also nice on glacier climbs, where you can suck meltwater out of small indentations on the surface of the glacier. |
