Free shaded topo maps with Google maps Terrain View

In November 2007 Google Maps unveiled it’s latest enhancement, and it’s a winner for backcountry users.  Before, Google maps focused on roads and cities.  If you wanted a map of a backcountry area you were out of luck, as Google maps previously showed only water features like rivers, streams and glaciers. 

Not any more.  Now if you go to Google maps, zoom in on, say, Mt. Hood, and click “Terrain” view in the tab along the top, you see this amazing shaded relief contour map, shown below. 

At present, it’s a slight hassle to print the map.  Once you have the map zoomed to the right level on your computer screen, use a free screen grabber utility like Jing to grab a screenshot, then open a Word document, paste the image, and print it.
