Gearspeak:  What’s an “HMS” carabiner, anyway?

A techie climbing term you may come across is an “HMS” biner.  What ‘da heck does this mean?  If you don’t speak German, it’s a reasonable question.  It’s actually an acronym for “Halbmastwurf sicherung”, which in German means “half clove hitch”, another name for a Munter hitch.  An HMS biner is thus a large locking pear shaped biner, suitable for belaying with a munter hitch.
This tip is from The Mountaineering Handbook by Craig Connally.
