High elevation camping - night moves

Altitude, cold, and maybe Diamox can all cause you to urinate more frequently when you are in the mountains.  At night in a storm is where this can be a problem - braving a 2:00 am gale to answer Nature’s Call is something no one cares to face.

While it’s mandatory gear for a big expedition, the luxury of a plastic pee bottle may be hard to fit in your pack.  Solution:  a sturdy Ziploc bag.  Lightweight, takes up no room in your pack, and can give you relief when you need it most.  Put it in the tent vestubule when it’s full in case the closure is not as strong as you thought.

Thanks to the California Mountaineering Club for this tip

If you are on a longer expedition and you do have a designated pee bottle, it will smell pretty ripe after a few days, especially when you open it in the tent. For a pee jug odor preventor,
before you settle in for the night, put 2 iodine tablets (the same as for water purification) into the empty pee jug. The iodine kills any bacteria which are the cause of the odor.
