Hiking really IS good for you

In an unusual study of hikers in the Austrian Alps, 45 subjects took up to five hour-long hikes a week for four months. During the first two months, they hiked uphill and rode a ski lift down. For the next two months, they took the lift up and walked down. Researchers found that when subjects walked downhill, their blood sugar levels were reduced and their glucose tolerance improved. When they hiked uphill, the level of harmful fats in the bloodstreams went down. Both kinds of exercise lowered the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.
