Hot weather camping tip: Keeping drinks cool

Scenario:  You’re car camping (or even on a one day trip), and heading out on a day of climbing or hiking.  You have some beverages you want to keep cool for after-hike refreshment, but you don’t want to lug a cooler and mess with ice. Solutions:
1)  There’s often a creek near trailheads.  Stash your drinks in the water and get them when you return.
2)  Trickier solution:  If you’re camping, take advantage of the nighttime cooler temperatures.  When you break camp in the morning, put the beverages (cool from being out all night) in the toe of your sleeping bag - the more cans/bottles, the better.  Wrap the bag tightly around the drinks.  Try to keep the bag out of direct sunlight, and try to park out of the direct sun.  When you return at the end of the day, the drinks will be surprisingly cool from the insulated sleeping bag - not quite like right out on an ice chest, but a whole lot better than if they were just sitting in your car.  Giving each can a wrap in aluminum foil helps hold the cold in even more.  This trick works great at Smith Rock or in any desert environments - cold nights and hot days.
