Improve your downclimbing skillsOn many alpine routes, it’s far faster to downclimb low angle 4th class terrain than to rappel – especially with a larger team. Downclimbing can be protected with a friction knot (prusik or Klemheist) on a fixed line if needed. More than one person can be on a line at the same time, depending on the steepness of the terrain, rockfall potential and how much it traverses. This can be a huge time saver over a rappel, where only one person can be on the tensioned rope at a time. Next time you are climbing any practice pitch within your abilities, indoors or out, try downclimbing on toprope to improve this vital alpine skill. For more, see this link. |
