LED “keychain” lightsThe tiny ultra-light, single-bulb LED (that’s Light Emitting Diode, for you gearheads) lights are now sold at most every mountain shop. They might look like a toy for a keychain, but they are useful for far more than that. They cast enough light to easily follow a trail in pitch dark. Add a shoestring and wear it around your neck - they are really easy to lose without a keeper string of some kind. Use it as an in-tent light rather than blasting your tentmate with your big climbing headlamp. Keep one in your first aid or survival kit for hiking - no need to carry a heavy flashlight as a backup on hikes when an LED light will light your way out in an emergency just fine. With one of these and a climbing headlamp, you should be set for most anything.
