DIY - Make a hanging stove

Hanging stoves can add a bit of extra weight and bulk, but they can be great for big walls, snow camping, expeditions, or cooking inside a tent. Best of all, a good design is versatile enough so you can disassemble it and still use your stove as a stand alone when the hanging setup is not needed. But the price for the pre-built units! Around 50 bucks for 2 pots and some wire, ouch!  Here’s how to build your own on the cheap. Try a thrift store for the pots.

What you need:

  • One covered 2 quart aluminum pot
  • one 3 quart aluminum pot (lid not needed)
  • one cartridge stove (Bluet, MSR Superfly or MSR Pocket Rocket)
  • a drill
  • 6 feet of the lightest chain you can find (try lamp pull chains, in the hardware store)
  • a key ring
  • a small strip of 1/2 inch hardware cloth (wire screen)
  • 3 S-hooks

Take the handles off the pots. Unscrew the stove, note the diameter of the “neck” between the burner unit and the canister, and drill a hole a touch bigger then this neck in the bottom of the 3 quart pot. Be sure this hole is centered. Insert the neck through from the bottom, and screw the burner unit on from the top. (Note: with the MSR stoves, you may need to remove the burner arms as well. Get a strip of hardware cloth (1/2 inch wire screen to support the pot.) Drill four more air intake holes, about ½ inch in diameter, in the bottom of the 3 quart pot. Drill 3 small holes (1/8”) equidistant around the lip of the 3 quart pot. Insert an S hook in each and crimp with pliers. Cut the chain into 3 equal lengths. Attach one end to the S hook and crimp with pliers, and the other end to the key ring. Clip the key ring with the biner, and hang from the object of your choice.
