Racking your runners - Do the Twist

There are many ways to rack your runners or webbing when climbing. Some climbers go to extremes in macramé, crafting tidy packets of nylon that dangle neatly from their harnesses. The problem: many of these knitting projects take far too much time when actually climbing. The ideal racking method takes a minimum of time to tie, untie, and racks neatly on your harness. Here’s the Better Way.

  1. Take your runner, webbing, or cordelette and double it (if needed) until it’s about 2 feet long.
  2. Grab each end of the loop, and twist the runner in opposite directions until the runners becomes tight on your fingers - usually about 5 or 6 twists.
  3. Insert a carabiner into each end of the twisted runner, where your fingers are. The webbing will magically twist onto itself in a double helix-like manner, making a neat package that racks cleanly, opens with a flick of the wrist, and takes about 10 seconds to make, once you get the hang of it.
