Rock Climb with Precision Footwork

When you rock climb, learn to place your feet with precision. For example, when you place your foot on a foothold, don’t just place your boot on the hold without consideration. Each foothold has a single best placement for your shoe. Try to initially feel that placement, and then place your foot with conviction.  Once placed, the foot should not move until stepping to the next foothold. Even when stretching out to reach that next handhold, don’t allow the shoe to move on the hold. Bend at the ankle if you need to, but consciously focus on keeping that shoe on the hold without movement.

Watch expert rock climbers. When they place their shoe on a hold they may move it once or twice to find that best placement, but once they do, their foot is literally glued to the hold and doesn’t move. Precision footwork is best practiced on low to moderate slab climbs and while traversing. And when you practice precision footwork, concentrate on each and every placement until it becomes automatic to find the best placement for your foot.
