Start out with warm water on a winter hike or climb

When heading out on a winter hike or climb, sipping warm or even lukewarm water from your water bottle is a lot nicer than water that’s at 32.7 degrees.  A simple way to do this is fill a thermos (or two) with hot water at home before you leave, then pour this water into your lighter water bottles at the trailhead.  It’ll stay warm for a surprisingly long time.  If you happen to have a spare ensolite pad at home, you can cut it up to make a cylinder with foam pad and good ‘ol duct tape that will keep the bottle warm even longer.
