Stow your ice axe fast while scrambling short rock sections

Alpine climbs often have short sections of rock scrambling between snow fields or glaciers. Rather than wasting time taking off your pack and attaching or retrieving your ice axe, temporarily stow it. Here’s how:

Slide the axe shaft between your pack strap and shoulder; between your shoulder blades. This is temporary- if you have a number of rock pitches to climb, take the time to strap the axe on your pack. Warning: be careful of the adze/pick hitting your neck; also take the axe out before taking off your pack or you will lose it.
