The “Five F’s for climber fatigue

It’s summit day on Mt. Rainier.  The weather is great, snow conditions are beautiful, and the team is making good time.  You take a rest stop at about 12,000 feet.  After the break, you notice one climber who is slow to get back on his feet.  You ask him how he’s doing, and he answers he’s feeling lethargic, has a bit of a headache, and he’s not sure if he can continue.  What do you do?  Remember the “5 F’s.”  Consider these measures when a climber is affected by the pattern of altered mental status and sudden decrease in performance.

F1 = Food – feed ‘em
F2 = Fluids – hydrate ‘em
F3 = Fatigue – rest ‘em
F4 = Feet – if altitude may be an issue, take ‘em down
F5 = Fahrenheit – warm ‘em or cool ‘em off
