Use a “sparker” for lighting stoves

Lighters and matches don’t always work when wet, and can break or malfunction – especially the cheap ones.  A sparking device, aka “firesteel”, will always light your stove or help make a survival fire.  They have no moving parts and even work while wet.
The simpler sparker models have a striker and a sparker, while a more upscale version has a small bar of magnesium included.  Shave off a few tiny bits of magnesium, add a spark, and you get a burst of almost 2000 degree C flame.

The Swedish company Light my Fire, or a vendor at the Saturday market in Portland, both sell sparkers that will generate super-hot sparks, more then enough to light a camp stove and light a fire in a backcountry survival situation.  The Saturday Market guy combines the sparker with a small magnesium stick.  The Light my Fire units are available at REI, and check the Saturday market for the locally made product.
