Mazamas

Expedition Committee

To further the advancement of mountaineering and the mountaineering spirit, the Mazamas Expedition committee assists and encourages climbers to plan trips to worldwide destinations.  The Mazamas support expedition climbing through grants, training, equipment lending, networking events and touring slideshows and conferences.  In addition, the Mazamas library also provides expedition research material.  Funds for expedition grants come from course tuition, ticket sales at slideshows and individuals who donate money to our grant fund.  Climbers do not need to be Mazama members to qualify for a grant.

We offer three types of expedition grants to qualified individuals.
• Leader Exploration Grant = mazama members wanting to explore new areas or experiences and then share them with others at a later date.
• Monty Smith Grant =  mazama member grant
• Alpine Adventure Grant =  non mazama member grant
For grant details.  Click on each grant type in the lefthand column.

We also teach an Expedition Training Course every other year. We also teach several shorter Skill Builder Classes throughout the year.

We have expedition planning contacts of Mazamas who have been there and done that.

We offer some expedition equipment that can be checked out from the Expedition Committee.

Our Expedition Networking Events are a great way to meet like minded people and learn about different areas of the world to conduct expeditions. Typically an event is put together once a quarter at a local pub and will concentrate on specific areas of the world where people may want to climb. At each event people who have been to the specific area of concentration will attend to answer questions and we also try to find people who have desires to go to these areas.

Expedition News – The Mazamas subscribes to a monthly newsletter of the expeditions around the world. See summaries online at Expedition News or the full newsletter in the library.
