Mountain Photography Skill Builder

Do you want to improve the quality of the pictures you take while on a Mazama trip?  Does taking pictures in the snow result in dark exposures?  Learn why and when your camera lies to you.  Beginners to advanced students.  Subjects include basic camera operation, exposure, lighting, composition, flash,lens choice and much more.

Field Session: Saturday, February 11, 2011, 9:00AM to 3:00PM at the Lodge

Lecture Class Subjects:   Taking pictures in the snow or with very bright sun or in poor light conditions make Mazama trips a much harder place to get great pictures. Add to this the very cold weather we encounter and know wonder so many pictures turn out less then perfect.

1. We will cover understand exposure.  What is an 18% gray card for,  Solution for side lighting, back lighting and silhouettes
2.  Basic camera operation will be discussed.  Please read your manual.
3.  Introduction to flash photography will point out when, why and how to us flash, and more important when not to use flash.
4.  Understanding the relationship between ISO, shutter speed and f stop will let you become much more creative.  Proper lens choice will be discussed. learning the difference choices you have with perfect exposure and there different results is always a highlight.
5.  There will be a slide show to give examples of the ideas and techniques we will be discussing.
6.  All these subjects plus a lot more tips and ideas will all lead up to our final lecture subject.  We will be using an article from Peterson’s Photographic Magazine titled 6 ways to improve your photography. 
7.  After improving your basic skills and understanding of photography we will move on to the creative side of photography.  What can you do to make your images more dramatic.  Now that you know the rules, explore how and when to break them.

Field Session: Saturday we will meet at the Gateway transit center at 7:30 am and drive to the Lodge at Goverment Camp.  We will have a meeting first thing then go out for a hike to get practical use of new knowledge. We will be back at the lodge for a slide show and lunch.  The afternoon may be spent at Timberline Lodge because of lack of snow at lower levels.

Instructor: The class will be taught by Dean Berry. He is represented by four different agencies, with the majority of his sells through Getty Images. His major area of work has been in advertizing and text book. Sports, education and family lifestyle lead his subject matter but a large format 4x5 camera was used for travel, nature and landscape his been his most enjoyable work. Dean had Bryan Peterson for a mentor who he said was the major reason he succeeded in stock photography. Several trips to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, the Cook Islands and South Beach Florida were highlights of his travels.
