Resident Lodge Manager Team Opening

Position Description

Mazama Lodge Managers (Two-Person Team)

Mazamas Executive Director

Mazama Lodge in Government Camp, OR

Status:

Exempt, Full-time, salaried

Staff:

Manage temporary labor and volunteers

Salary and Benefits:

Competitive with incentives. Benefits include medical insurance, an apartment (w/o kitchen) in the Mazama Lodge, all utilities, meals, and 15 days (three weeks) annual vacation.

Facility:

The Mazama Lodge offers 80 bunks with a professional kitchen, dormitories, great room, tv room and recreation room located on Mt. Hood in Government Camp, Oregon.  The kitchen is classified as a restaurant by the state. October through May the Lodge is open from noon on Friday to noon on Monday to members and may remain open other weekdays by special arrangement for other non-profit groups and private parties.  June through September the lodge is open to members and is home to many non-profits, multi-day outdoor camps, and weddings.  Workdays vary during this time.  The Mazama Lodge operates under a special use permit issued by the United States Forest Service.  Learn more about Mazama Lodge here.

Position Summary:

The lodge managers manage the day-to-day operations of the lodge, regularly exercise independent judgment and discretion in decision-making, and supervise employees and volunteers. Managers work closely with the Lodge Committee and executive director in developing policies and procedures that create a welcoming, clean and safe environment.  Office hours are generally Thursday 9:00 am to Monday 5:00 pm. Days off are generally Tuesday and Wednesday.  These days may be altered, particularly during the summer, as agreed between the lodge managers, Lodge Committee and the executive director.

Responsibilities:

  • Staff the lodge during regular office hours; available for emergencies around-the-clock when guests are present
  • Manage reservations and communications in a timely fashion. (Respond within 24 hours during normal office hours.)
  • Plan menus, prepare and serve healthy and attractive meals.  Shop for food and supplies.  (A mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related driving.)
  • Maintain the facility’s appearance and cleanliness by performing daily custodial duties and minor maintenance
  • Fulfill the duties outlined in the Mazama Lodge Operations manual.
  • Market the lodge to nonprofit and for-profit groups, affiliate groups, and weddings as per the Lodge Committee’s and executive director’s marketing initiatives
  • Negotiate contracts with potential clients
  • Work closely with the staff accountant, executive director, and Lodge Committee to manage the budget and finances per the reporting deadlines
  • Attend monthly Lodge Committee meetings and meetings with executive director
  • Provide monthly article in the Mazama bulletin summarizing activities and motivating members to use the lodge
  • Train and supervise volunteers and temporary staff for vacation relief, select summer weeks and some special events
  • Additional responsibilities as needed

Qualifications:

  • Two years experience in managing a like facility
  • Two years experience in menu planning, cooking, food service or in the hospitality industry
  • Maintain a valid food handlers permit from Clackamas County
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Computer literate with in Microsoft office, Access, Excel, email, and scheduling software
  • Skilled in household mechanical maintenance
  • Experience working with volunteers patiently and positively
  • Ability to accept feedback and manage direction from multiple parties
  • Valid drivers license

Physical Demands:

  • Perform entrance/exit snow removal
  • Carry groceries and push or pull other items occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand for long periods of time for food-service duties
  • Regularly walk up a snow-covered path to the lodge during the winter
  • Bend to clean the facility
