AYM Adventure Log

Here’s a brief description of some recurring events sponsored by the Adventurous Young Mazamas (AYM), and a list of some of the fun events we held over the last year or so.  We hope you can join us for our next adventure!

Recurring AYM Events

AYM Winter Weekend
Join AYM for a weekend of fun in the snow at one of our most popular weekend events:  our winter weekend getaway at Mazama Lodge in Government Camp on Mt. Hood.  Typically held in early January, we usually have 60-80 people attending filling the Lodge to capacity.  We’ll have snowshoeing, Nordic and backcountry skiing at all levels, a lot of fun folks, socializing, games, a roaring fire and occasionally some igloo building.  Past years have even seen adventurous folks go out for an evening snowshoe, a sledding expedition on the hill out behind the Lodge or a moonlight Nordic ski tour.  Full details for this annual event are typically posted in December. 

Weekend Trips
For the last few years AYM has sponsored weekend trips to Smith Rock State Park in central Oregon.  Organized activities at Smith Rock include top-roped and multi-pitch rock-climbing, hiking and cave exploration in the area.  Other years have seen weekend trips to Newberry Crater, beach weekends at Fort Stevens and Cape Lookout, trips to Crater Lake, the Wallowas, Steens Mountain, Nesika Lodge, Tilly Jane, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Redwood National Park (held annually five years running) and Lava Beds National Monument in northern California.  Backpack trips have been led in the past along the Olympic coast, Bull of the Woods, Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson and more!

Mazama Climb Night
Throughout the winter months (November through April), AYM sponsors Climb Night for the Mazamas.  Held at local rock gyms, this is a great way to work on your rock technique throughout the rainy season.  All members and non-members are welcome to attend regardless of age or climbing experience.  Come work on your rock skills in a beginner-friendly, supportive environment.  For full details follow the link above.

Gorge EnGorge
Offered occasionally throughout the winter months, this is a fun leisurely outing:  a short brisk hike out in the Columbia Gorge followed by a visit for an all-you-can-eat brunch typically at Skamania Lodge.

Pub Night
Every third Monday of the month, join AYM for our roaming Pub Night!  We’re usually at a different venue every month, moving around the city.  Everyone is welcome to attend; this is a great informal way to get introduced to the Mazamas and AYM.  Please join us!

Summer Evening Hikes
Taking advantage of the long summer evenings, typically from about May through September, AYM offers regular Wednesday evening events.  Evening events typically meet at 6:30pm and go out for a short hike (or other activity) in the local area or visit a close-in destination out in the Columbia Gorge.  Activities may include rambles in Forest Park & downtown Portland, hiking at Powell Butte, Beacon Rock, Angel’s Rest, Wauna Viewpoint, Oneonta Gorge, Duncan Creek, rollerblading and biking on Sauvie island and along the Springwater Corridor.
