Expedition Grant:  Individual Funding Application

The Mazama Expedition Committee is pleased to hear of your efforts to join an expedition and your interest in applying for an Individual Recognition Grant.

Below is a description of the application process, the evaluation criteria, and an application for an Individual Recognition Grant.

Our goal is to develop the physical and mental abilities of Mazama members (and non-members) through expeditions and to enhance the dissemination of knowledge gained. We look for a history of participation and service to the Mazamas, as well as the climbing community in general, so individuals bring back skills to share as climb leaders and organizers of Mazama educational programs.

We also consider supporting non-Mazamas organized expeditions for possible contribution to the sport of mountaineering and the information provided that would benefit our members.  Climbers do not have to be Mazama members to be eligible for an expedition grant.

The Mazamas has a very good library providing expeditionary research material.

Note:  There is no deadline for Expedition grants applications.  We accept them year ‘round and evaluate them as they are received.

Individual Recognition Grant:  Application Process

Please answer the questions below.

  1. Complete the application below.
  2. Contact the Chairperson to arrange a discussion of the application with the committee.
  3. The Committee will review the application and make a recommendation.
  4. The Committee Chairperson will take the recommendation to the Mazamas Executive Council for final approval.
  5. Upon approval, applicants will be notified by the Committee Chairperson and will be required to sign a release of liability form and a funding agreement.
  6. Note: this process can take several months, so start early.

Individual Recognition Grant:  Application Evaluation Criteria

In considering whether to grant funding, the Expedition Committee may consider the following criteria where applicable:

  • The Individual’s history of participation and service within the Mazamas, as well as the climbing community in general.
  • The ability of the proposed expedition to provide a meaningful and challenging experience.
  • The significance of the expedition within the Mazamas and the mountaineering community.
  • Will the expedition be performing any acts of goodwill or conducting scientific research?
  • The uniqueness of the expedition. Has the proposed expedition been previously attempted? How often and with what success?
  • The location, accessibility and difficulty of the route and the style of ascent.
  • Your financial needs.
  • Is the Individual receiving any additional financial assistance from outside sources?
  • How prepared is the group? Is their planning and research adequate?
