TIPS of the MONTH

• Remember that weather can change rapidly in popular hiking areas, particularly higher elevations near treeline in the mountains. Check weather websites that can give you detailed, elevation-specific forecasts, such as http://www.weather.gov and http://www.mountain-forecast.com. Come prepared for inclement weather, regardless of the forecast.
• Bring plenty of water, but don’t forget to eat. Especially on a hot day when you’re drinking lots of water, you need to replace the salt you’re losing. Salty foods and electrolyte drink powder/tablets to add to your water can be helpful for keeping you feeling good and energetic on the trail.
• Sun protection (Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm) is part of the Hiker’s 10 Essentials, but sometimes if it’s an overcast day, it’s easy to forget to use it. Remember, it’s possible to get a nasty sunburn or painfully chapped lips when hiking on a cloudy day!
• 10 Essentials - do you have them all? Learn more about them here: http://www.mazamas.org/your/adventure/starts-here/C459/
• Always remember to pay and thank your carpool driver (a contribution of $0.10/mile is recommended). Bring change for this.

Note: As of Spring 2012, the A to C-level difficulty scale for hikes has been expanded to include D-level hikes. Click here to learn more about how hikes are rated for difficulty.

Portland Street Rambles Tuesday and Thursday from REI - Downtown

Various leaders will lead walks every Tuesday and Thursday starting at REI in the Pearl. Rambles start promptly at 6 pm. Multiple groups will be lead at different paces.  Bring a headlamp. These rambles average 4-8 miles 500-1500ft and meet-up at REI-Pearl NW 14th & Johnson 6 p.m.

Every Wednesday - Mt. Tabor Ramble East Side from Mazama Mountaineering Center 43rd/Stark.
Walk at a brisk pace (2.5-3.0 mi/hr) through the streets, admiring the gardens of SE Portland up to Mt. Tabor Park. We may even catch a glimpse of a heritage tree. Once in the park we will take alternating trails to the top of the park up to the top of the #280 stairs at the NE corner of the park. From there we will have 30 minutes to walk up and down the stairs then finish with a moderate stroll back to the MMC. Great training for climbing or backpacking this summer. Total mileage 6 miles (not including stairs climbed up/down). Elevation gain approx. 600 ft. Starts promptly at 6 pm. Total time 2 hours. Leader: Meg Linza, (503) 502-8782.

Sometimes there are special rambles that don’t conform to this schedule or meet at a different place. In that case, they will be listed separately in this space.
